Stoicism
Dont cry over spilled milk. Do not be affected by poor outcome, or rather, be affected positively. It is a way of life, Negative experience is not equal to negative reaction. It is all about perspective.
We don't get sad because of poor experiences rather, we are sad because its an unexpected poor experience. Lets say rain, we expect that rain happens often, although it ruins our plans, we understand how rain works and that it will eventually pass, therefore we don't sulk about it. We also know how to work around rain and also learn to appreciate rain and its benefits. Similar to a poor situation, if we are able to change our mindset to appreciate them better, perhaps we wouldn't experience such negative emotions when dealing with them.
We should focus on doing things that are beneficial for ourselves, based on our own expectations rather than society's. Not to put your expectations on external things.
The dichotomy of control: We may not be able to control everything, but we can control how we react to it. You should judge the success of your work by effort put in rather than results. It is out of our control. With things out of control, we should not have them affect us so greatly.
Stoics are comfortable not having money. They have comfort in knowing that they can live a life that may not have everything money can buy. They are comfortable in knowing that they may not be able to be the richest, just the essentials, and accepting that there are things to look forward to even in those situations.
Personal thoughts: At the end of the day, perspective is what matters. However, its so much easier said than done. With peer constantly talking about the next big thing to earn money, the next NFT, the next crypto, FOREX investments. Its tough to determine what your self interest really is. The need to conform to the expectation of those around you to fit in really sinks in to yourself. Whether you realise it or not. Its tough because choosing an opinion that is unpopular would make you question the viability and sanity of the option.
When I think of living a simpler life that allows me to appreciate any situation and being comfortable living a life of homecooked food, in a small house, with a wife, kids, family, it almost feels unreal. Just because I too have been influenced by those around me and am afraid that I will miss out on the luxuries of the rich. To go out to all the most expensive buffets, living the lush life, driving the expensive car, wearing the most expensive fashion wears.
Will I eventually take up self interest over societal interest? A part of me yearns for that life, I just hope that some day I will become the stoic that can place self interest over societal interest.
I wish I wanted a life of pure innocence, joy, and love.
